2011 Logo for Celebration on the Grand!

So I’ve been slacking big time in blogging about the wonders of Grand Rapids because I’ve been too busy experiencing it! πŸ™‚ But I couldn’t go without writing about a yearly tradition that’s been going for over 30 years- CELEBRATION ON THE GRAND!

When I moved to Grand Rapids in 2003, I was told that the weekend after Labor Day, I was to get my butt downtown for one last hurrah for summer- where people were celebrating the wonderful new things that have been added to Grand Rapids in the past year! Like back in 10980 when Celebration on the Grand began because the Gerald R. Ford museum and the Amway Grand opened and the Grand Rapids Art Museum moved to the Old Federal Building! This year we have many things to celebrate- like the opening of the New UICA! πŸ™‚

This festival has ALL of the makings for something wonderful! Live music (at Rosa Parks Circle and Ah-Nab-Awen Park), good food (Taste of Downtown on Monroe Center), and Fireworks (Friday night at dusk). It appeals to all ages and you will spot many families gracing the streets to join in on the festivities! And my favorite part? Everything is FREE!!!!! It doesn’t get much better than that, huh?

Last night they kicked off the weekend with great bands at Rosa Parks Circle- including StarFarm, an 80’s cover band who I recommend going to see when they play at The Woods!

Tonight you will see fireworks starting approximately at dusk! Get to the lawn in front of the Gerald R. Ford or any of the foot bridges for a spectacular view! You can also head down to Monroe Center Ave. for the taste of downtown and join local restaurants to taste the wonderful dishes they create!

Tomorrow, if you aren’t too tired, I recommend coming out to see Union Guns- a country-ish band- at Rosa Parks Circle at 8:00 p.m., they never disappoint! Followed by twenty year old Hunter Hayes the country singer! Or head over to Ah-Nab-Awen park located near the Gerald R. Ford Museum to catch a performance of Circquetacular; an entertaining show for people of all ages!

Celebration on the Grand is a great time to remember why Grand Rapids is such a wonderful place to live! We look back on the year; on summer and see the progressive steps this city is making! Make sure you don’t miss it!
